Peter Obi Meets Obasanjo, Olubadan Ahead 2027 Elections

Peter Obi, former Anambra governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has resumed high-level consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.

On Sunday, he met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

Obi was joined by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, Yunusa Tanko, and Segun Adebanjo. The meetings, held separately, focused on unity, leadership, and Nigeria’s future.

“The visit is about Nigeria, selfless leadership, leadership that is committed to turning society around,” Obi said.

Ibadan’s Role in National Development

Obi described Ibadan as central to Nigeria’s growth. “Because Ibadan is very strategic and central to the development of Nigeria,” he said. He praised Ladoja’s experience as a former senator, governor, and businessman.

“He will have all that he needs to succeed. And I will support him as Olubadan for the sake of one Nigeria,” Obi added.

He also noted Ibadan’s legacy in education. “Most of the schools in Ibadan, University of Ibadan for example, were attended by many people from different parts of Nigeria,” he said.

Oba Ladoja responded with humility. “That I am alive today is a further confirmation of the Grace of God upon my life,” he said.

“It is God who enthroned Olubadan, not because you have money or influential people around you,” he added.

A Call for Unity and Justice

Obi later posted about the visits on his official X handle. He described them as moments of reflection and hope.

“In both visits, we were fortunate to discuss the state of our nation and how all of us can live in unity, love, fairness, and justice progressively together,” he wrote.

“The meetings make me believe that coming together of a competent team with capacity, compassion, and commitment to build a new Nigeria that is Possible.”

These meetings may signal early moves ahead of an expectedly steeply contested ticket within Nigeria’s crowded opposition presidential hopefuls.

Obasanjo, who backed Obi in 2023, remains an influential figure domestically and internationally.

Ladoja’s coronation as the 44th Olubadan is set for September 26 at Mapo Hall.
