Nigerian Resident Doctors Call Off Strike After Two Days

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its five-day warning strike, only two days after it began.

NARD President, Tope Osundara, confirmed the decision in a telephone chat on Sunday. “The strike has been suspended,” he said.

Osundara explained that the doctors are to resume duties immediately. He noted that the federal government has responded to some demands, while promising to attend to others.

“We did this as a sign of goodwill and to assist Nigerians who are seeking healthcare in our various facilities,” he added.

The association had raised issues, including manpower shortages, unpaid arrears, and the downgraded status of membership certificates from the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

They also demanded the immediate release of the corrected circular on doctors’ remuneration from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC).

Osundara said resident doctors will carefully review the government’s next steps before deciding on further action.

The five-day strike was announced last Friday. Its effect was immediate, crippling operations in federal hospitals across the country. Patients were stranded, while services were reduced to skeletal levels.

The suspension, however, brings relief to many Nigerians who had been left struggling to access medical care during the action.
