The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Chapter, has rejected a new dress code policy for civil servants in the state.
The union said government should be fixing real welfare challenges instead of creating rules that “tax the pockets of workers.”
NLC Chairman, Comrade Goodluck Oforbrukueta, told workers in Asaba on Friday that anyone punished under the new policy should report immediately to the Labour House.
“We nor gree because the money we dey earn nor reach chop. E nor reach pay our children school fees. E nor reach pay our house rent. E nor reach transport ourselves to work, not to talk say all of us must wear suit,” he declared.
The NLC accused the government of ignoring urgent needs like salary review, health care, and office facilities.
“Dem never even think how to improve on weytin we dey earn, whether we fit chop, whether we fit take care of our health. Dem dey say make we wear suit or wear that. The money nor dey for us to wear those ones,” Oforbrukueta said.
He added that many civil servants lack basic tools like chairs, tables, biro and paper in their offices. Forcing them to spend money on suits, he argued, was “mockery of the suffering worker.”
“Policy Without Consultation”
The NLC accused state officials of bypassing proper channels by issuing the dress code without dialogue with workers’ representatives.
“If you want to make new policy, why you nor go discuss am with workers’ representatives? Dem nor even discuss am with any of us. Dem just sit down for their office, issue circular,” Oforbrukueta lamented.
He warned that allowing such directives could open the door for reckless rules. “Na so one person go come tomorrow, he go say make Civil Servants nor dey marry. Na that one be new policy of government,” he told the crowd.
The union insisted that civil service rules cannot be changed at will by one official. “One person nor fit wake up change am. We will protect anybody from anyone who wants to sanction you,” Oforbrukueta vowed.
