Social media influencer Reno Omokri has advised Nigerians not to fall for calls to replicate the current protests in nepal/">Nepal. He warned that such moves could cause more harm than good, citing the painful lessons of October 2020.
Omokri reminded Nigerians of the “wanton destruction of properties” that followed the EndSARS protests in Lagos. He argued that many who pushed for the chaos were not even from the state or contributing to its taxes.
In his words: “The Lagos State Government built the best forensic laboratory in Africa, and that facility was burnt to the ground, along with other multibillion Naira public infrastructure, during the #EndSARS protests.”
He said this was why MohBad’s autopsy had to be conducted abroad, making Nigeria look weak. He added that 80 BRT buses, courthouses, and police stations were destroyed, causing damages valued at $305 million.
Omokri recalled that the Days of Rage protest last year inflicted ₦200 billion in damage in Northern Nigeria and nearly destabilised the country.
Nigeria vs. Nepal
He dismissed comparisons with Nepal, insisting Nigeria is far better governed. “I have been to Nepal. Nigeria is a much better-governed space than Nepal,” he wrote.
He pointed to Nigeria’s political stability, noting: “We are the only African country where five former Presidents live peacefully and work with the incumbent government via the Council of State.”
Omokri also cited economic progress. He said Nigeria’s GDP has grown from ₦269.29 trillion in May 2023 to ₦372.8 trillion today, an increase of $67 billion.
He then advised: “If these incidents of good governance are still not satisfactory and you want to replicate the Nepali protests locally, then please, by all means, start from your state of origin!”
Omokri is referencing the youth-led anti-government violent protests in that has gripped the South Asian nation of Nepal in the last few days. The protests led to the burning of the home of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal in Kathmandu’s Dallu area on Tuesday, killing his wife Rabi Laxmi Chitrakar.
At least 22 people died and more than 300 were injured. Prime Minister Oli was forced to resign on Tuesday, along with several cabinet ministers.
