Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is set to deliver his address at the 80th Session of the high-level General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday, September 24.
According to a revised provisional list of speakers made available to newsmen, Tinubu will speak on the second day of the debate during the afternoon session, around 8:30 pm local time (2:30 pm Nigerian time).
He will be the 17th world leader to speak on day two, joining 195 global leaders, including 98 heads of state, five vice-presidents, 44 heads of government, and four deputy prime ministers. The list also includes 37 ministers, one crown prince, and four chairs of delegation.
UNGA Speaking Traditions
The President of Brazil, Luiz da Silva, will open the general debate as is tradition, followed by U.S. President Donald Trump, the host country’s leader.
However, there are indications that the list is still being updated and Nigeria’s speaking slot might still be altered, particularly if the president doesn’t attend in person.
Traditionally, heads of state speak on the first and second days, while vice-presidents present from the third day.
Last year, Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu on day one, maintaining the presidential slot.
Movses Abelian, UN Under-Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management, said: “The revised list reflects changes in the level of representation (upgrades and downgrades) and exchanges among Member States. Please note that this list will continue to be updated until the start of the General Debate as changes are communicated by Member States.”
UNGA 80 Themes and Activities
The theme for the 80th UNGA session is “Better Together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights.”
The session opened on September 9 with the inauguration of Annalena Baerbock of Germany as UNGA President. Baerbock, a former German Foreign Minister and the fifth woman to preside over the General Assembly, called on member states to unite against global crises, including war, poverty, and climate change.
The high-level debate will run from September 23 to 29, forming part of a wider UNGA high-level week from September 22 to 30.
This period includes key conferences such as the High-level Meeting to Commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the UN, the SDG Moment, the 30th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, the Conference on Palestine and Two-State Solution, the Climate Summit, and the Global Dialogue on AI Governance.
With President Tinubu’s address, Nigeria will join global leaders in shaping discussions on peace, development, human rights, and international cooperation.
