Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly reaching out to Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, seeking an alliance before the 2027 elections.
Some media reports claim Jonathan’s emissaries have already met Kwankwaso’s team. Both camps reportedly came to the table with “minimal demands” as they explore common ground.
Kwankwaso’s side is asking for the vice-presidential slot in any deal. “While Jonathan’s team is not outrightly opposed to working with Kwankwaso, no final position has been taken on the demand,” the source explained.
Jonathan’s real test may not be his running mate but his choice of platform. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are the two likely options, but both carry baggage.
Within the PDP, loyalists of Nyesom Wike — now aligned with APC — remain firmly against Jonathan. In the ADC, many of Jonathan’s allies are in control, but Atiku Abubakar is also said to be eyeing the ticket.
One ally admitted Jonathan is in a fix. “Jonathan is both optimistic and confused about his chances in the PDP and the ADC. Some of his competitors still have remote control over both parties, making it dicey for him to settle for any of them as a platform for 2027.”
ADC or PDP?
The ADC, now under David Mark, has become a strong fallback. Yet Jonathan’s emotional attachment to PDP keeps pulling him back.
“It is a fact that at the moment, the ADC is made up of mostly Goodluck Jonathan’s ‘boys’ who are ready to offer him the platform to run. But the point is that Atiku is also angling for the same platform, even though he does not seem to have a foothold on the party like Jonathan,” another source noted.
Still, many believe Jonathan may return home to the PDP. “It is getting clearer and clearer by the day that the former president would likely pitch his tent with the PDP, given the fact he has very strong sentiments for the party and most of those who left the party did so to protest Wike’s takeover of its structures.”
