Tinubu Orders Urgent Action to Cut Rising Food Prices

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a Federal Executive Council committee to act swiftly in implementing new measures to bring down food prices nationwide.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, announced the directive in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said the order focuses on reducing logistics costs by guaranteeing safe passage for farm produce across transport routes often plagued by insecurity and extortion.

“The President has given a matching order with a federal executive council committee already handling it on how we are going to promote safe passage of agricultural foods and commodities across our various routes in the country,” Abdullahi told reporters during a capacity-building workshop for Senate correspondents.

Tackling Food Insecurity

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, has been battling worsening food insecurity since the removal of fuel subsidy, rising transport costs, and frequent attacks on major highways disrupted the free movement of goods.

Despite government interventions, food remains unaffordable for millions. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), food inflation in July reached over 35%, one of the highest in two decades.

The minister explained that the plan is tied to Tinubu’s broader vision of food sovereignty—ensuring not only availability, but also affordability, accessibility, and nutrition on a sustainable basis.

New Farming Schemes

To back up the plan, Abdullahi revealed that government will soon launch a Farmer Soil Health Scheme to boost productivity. A revamped cooperative reform initiative is also underway, aimed at mobilising resources and empowering rural farmers.

“Mr. President has shown tremendous interest in the cooperative sector as a veritable tool for resource mobilisation, for economic activity generation, and to improve the livelihood of members,” Abdullahi added.

Earlier in June, Tinubu stressed that Nigeria must learn to grow and produce most of its food. “We are on the path to achieving food sovereignty,” he said during his Democracy Day speech.
