Nationwide Blackout as Nigeria’s Generation Falls to 1.5MW

Nigeria’s fragile electricity grid collapsed on Wednesday, cutting power supply to large parts of the country. Data from the Independent System Operator showed that generation fell from 2,917MW to just 1.5MW within one hour.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident. “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am today,” the company said on X.

AEDC added, “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

A Troubled Power Sector

This collapse adds to the string of blackouts Nigeria has endured in recent years. In February, another system disturbance left communities powerless. In January, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) dismissed collapse reports, even as consumers sat in darkness.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) admitted in July that no collapse was recorded in the first quarter of 2025. Yet it warned that operators must improve coordination to protect the system.

With over 200 million people relying on a grid that fails repeatedly, frustration is growing. Nigeria has an installed capacity of over 18,000MW but struggles to generate 8,000MW daily.

A recent agreement with Germany aims to inject an additional 12,000MW into the system. With every government promising the same thing, will this finally end the long nights without power? Or is the cycle set to continue?
