The National Assembly has reaffirmed its strong backing for the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) Programme.
Malam Suleiman Odapu, Information and Communications Officer of NG-CARES, stated that Mr Abubakar Kusada, Chairman of the House Committee on NG-CARES, made the declaration during a stakeholder meeting in Abuja.
Kusada described NG-CARES as “a lifeline for poor communities and a vital instrument for building resilience among vulnerable Nigerians.”
The lawmaker also confirmed the legislature’s commitment to supporting NG-CARES, explaining that oversight visits to states would strengthen collaboration between the legislature and the executive to achieve poverty alleviation goals.
“No community should be left out” in ongoing efforts to cushion households and businesses from economic shocks, Kusada said.
A Lifeline for Vulnerable Communities
“NG-CARES is more than a programme, it is a lifeline. It is about families regaining their dignity, businesses reopening doors of opportunity and rebuilding communities for a sustainable future,” he added.
“NG-CARES stands as one of the most ambitious and people-focused initiatives, reaching households, businesses, and communities across the 36 states and the FCT,” Kusada affirmed.
Prof. Foluso Okunmadewa, representing the World Bank, commended the legislature’s involvement. “The legislature’s active participation gives confidence that NG-CARES will endure as a national instrument for poverty alleviation and resilience, even beyond donor support,” he said.
The National Coordinator of NG-CARES, Dr Abdulkarim Obaje, expressed gratitude to the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, for establishing the Committee on NG-CARES.
“The establishment of the committee complements the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu,” Obaje said. “The agenda emphasizes inclusive growth and development, especially for the poor and vulnerable.”
Programme Implementation and Reach
Present at the event were Commissioners for Budget and Planning from Cross River, Kebbi, Sokoto, Gombe, Ebonyi, Bauchi, and Nasarawa States.
NG-CARES is a World Bank-assisted programme designed to expand access to livelihood support, food security services, and grants for poor and vulnerable households.
The programme is implemented across all 36 states and the FCT, leveraging existing government structures to deliver results for communities in need.
