Norwegians are heading to the polls today, Monday, in a general election that could reshape the country’s social and economic future.
The future of the century-old wealth tax has dominated campaign discussions, alongside other issues like healthcare, education, and welfare policies.
Voting opened on Sunday and continued through Monday, with both domestic and international observers closely watching the process.
The centre-left bloc, led by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, has governed Norway for four years. They aim to maintain the wealth tax to fight inequality.
The right-wing coalition, led by the Progress Party, calls for abolishing the levy. “It penalises entrepreneurs who might have taxable stakes in valuable companies, but little real income,” said party leader Sylvie Listhaug.

Wealth Tax Details and Voter Dynamics
The wealth tax applies at up to 1.1% on assets and shares valued above 1.76 million kroner (€150,000). Reductions exist for debt, property, and other allowances.
Social media has amplified debate, especially among young voters. Of over 4 million eligible voters, about 310,000 can vote for the first time. Voters with immigrant backgrounds make up 11.5% of the electorate.
