Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, has freed six inmates who had spent the longest years in custody.
The order came during her official visit to custodial centres across the state, according to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
NCoS spokesman Musbahu Lawan explained that the inmates’ cases suffered long delays, missing files, and lack of active prosecution.
Abdu-Aboki said the action was part of her resolve to reform and strengthen justice delivery in Kano.
“The release was made due to the absence of active prosecution, missing case files, and prolonged delays in their legal proceedings,” she stated.
She called for deeper collaboration among the Nigeria Police, the Attorney General’s office, and NCoS. “We must work together for timely justice and reduce prolonged pre-trial detention,” she added.
The CJ also urged the freed inmates to live as responsible citizens. “Become good ambassadors of society, desist from crime, and contribute positively to your communities,” she advised.
Controller of Corrections, Ado Inuwa, also appealed to the released men to stay law-abiding.
He cautioned that a return to crime would only take them back to incarceration.
Inuwa praised the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Indidi-Nwakuche, for sustaining rehabilitation programmes.
He said skills training and education within custodial centres aim to make inmates self-reliant after release.
