Pastor William Kumuyi of the Deeper Life Bible Ministry has stirred doctrinal debate about premarital courtship and marriage. He said Deeper Life’s long-standing marriage rules are not strictly biblical injunctions.
He spoke during the 2025 Global Family and Marriage Conference. The cleric addressed thousands of believers gathered to hear him speak on love, courtship, and Christian maturity.
Kumuyi said the church’s six-month courtship rule was a human idea. It was never a divine commandment.
“We just felt you need some time to know one another. And then we said one month will be too short, two months too short. So, why not six months? But it is not from the Bible,” he said.
He also mentioned the old ban on women visiting their suitors. He said it was not scriptural, just a tradition the church adopted over time.
“Six months is all right, but it’s not something inflexible. If we change it to three months, we’re not changing the Bible, because six months is not in the Bible,” Kumuyi added.
Church Traditions vs God’s Commandments
Kumuyi urged Christians to grow in understanding. He said believers must know the difference between God’s law and church customs.
“As a Christian, you need to be so mature that you know the difference between the law of God and the principles in the church,” he said.
He explained that church rules are meant to guide, not to replace scripture. He warned against treating human rules as divine.
Kumuyi also spoke about the church’s marriage committees. He said they were created to help members, not to enforce doctrine.
“There’s no marriage committee in the New Testament. We created it to help you, not because we can give you a chapter and a verse. It is church administration,” he clarified.
