Dr. Yusuf Yakub, the Director-General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC), announced exciting plans to expand the technical volunteer scheme to help countries in need of skilled professionals.
On Friday, in Abuja, 20 Technical Aid Corps (TAC) volunteers, including doctors and nurses, set off for The Gambia.
Yakub said the initiative can help tackle unemployment in Nigeria. He explained that Nigeria has many young people and experts without proper jobs, and the world is in dire need of skilled workers.
“You know we have an abundance of unemployed youths in the country, a lot of experts that are not fully employed, and the whole world needs experts to fill some gaps,” he stated.
A Global Effort
The program is getting positive feedback from other nations, with Jamaica requesting around 400 experts.
Yakub urged the volunteers to represent Nigeria well and praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting this program, which strengthens Nigeria’s diplomatic relations.
The wealth of human resources in Nigeria can make a difference in the lives of people in other nations, fostering cooperation, culture, and many other benefits.
Yakub emphasized the importance of the program, “Above all we are serving humanity, and to the glory of God this programme has been given every support by the Tinubu administration.”
Ambassador Zakari Usman, Director of Programmes, explained that selecting the volunteers was a challenging task, with 20 chosen out of more than 10,000 applicants. He encouraged the volunteers to behave well abroad to enhance Nigeria’s image.
The Team of Volunteers
Prof. Adanlawo Isaac, a surgeon and team leader, expressed his gratitude for being part of the team, promising to represent Nigeria positively.
The team consists of medical professionals like doctors and nurses: Awumtiya Nelson, Aishatu Umar, Folake Iyogun, Salim Jaafar, Oyindamola Oladunmiye, Tula Musa, Julmucit Gwapna, and others.
