NRC Retrieves Locomotive, Coaches Following Derailment

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) managed to pull out the locomotive and some coaches from where the train derailed on August 26.

Dr. Kayode Opeifa, who leads the NRC, shared this update in a statement from Lagos on Thursday. He was at the scene on Wednesday, August 27, to directly oversee the recovery efforts, working alongside NRC’s skilled recovery engineers.

“During the exercise, the recovery team successfully retrieved one of the derailed passenger coaches, in addition to the locomotive earlier recovered on the day,” Opeifa mentioned.

He praised the engineers for acting with great professionalism and speed, saying they handled the situation well.

Quick Recovery and Collaboration

The managing director also thanked the security personnel for keeping the recovery process smooth and safe. They made sure there were no interruptions, which was vital for a quick recovery.

He said he was mindful of the partnership with the media, highlighting their crucial role in keeping the public informed and lending their continued support during tough times.

Opeifa said it was important to share clear and accurate information with Nigerians so they could understand the situation better and see the progress being made.

“NRC reassures its esteemed passengers and the public that all necessary measures are being taken to restore train operations in the shortest possible time,” he assured. “Passenger safety and service reliability remain the corporation’s top priorities,” he added.

The NRC said it is committed to getting trains up and running soon, focusing on keeping passengers safe and the service reliable.

But this train incident, particularly on the Abuja-Kano rail line, is one too many — whether from terrorist attacks or this train derailment. What needs to be done to make train travel in this country safe and enjoyable, like in other regions? Share your recommendations in the comments section.
