The Nigerian government has extended condolences to Vietnam after Typhoon Kajiki unleashed destruction in parts of the country.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja mourned the victims and praised Vietnamese emergency teams for their quick response.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria extends its deepest condolences and heartfelt solidarity to the government and people of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, especially to the families who have lost their loved ones and those whose homes and livelihoods have been destroyed by the devastating impact of Typhoon Kajiki, which resulted in a landslide in Central Vietnam, causing significant loss of life, widespread displacement of communities and severe damage to properties and public infrastructure,” the ministry said.
According to media reports, at least three lives have been lost. Thirteen people are injured and nearly 7,000 homes have been damaged.
The storm also triggered power outages and flooding across central and northern Vietnam, affecting several provinces and even the capital city, Hanoi.
Nigeria noted the “swift and coordinated efforts of Vietnamese authorities in leading emergency operations, carrying out evacuations and providing immediate relief to affected communities.”
The ministry expressed confidence that Vietnam will rise again. “Nigeria’s thoughts and prayers are with the nation during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
