The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has chosen Dr. Fadimatu Hamza from Plateau as their new National Amirah.
This election took place during FOMWAN’s 40th anniversary and National Convention in Kaduna, which gathered members from all over the country for four days.
Hamza is taking over from Mrs. Rafiah Sanni of Oyo State. Sanni served as the 10th National Amirah and led the organization for four years.
Dr. Hamza promised to collaborate with other executive members and FOMWAN supporters across Nigeria to extend the organization’s impact locally and globally.
New Leadership, New Vision
She will have Na’ibah Zeenat Ismikhai from Edo as her assistant during their two-year tenure, before their possible re-election in 2027.
“We are honored to lead this great organization at this critical juncture,” Hamza said. “We pledge to build on the foundations laid by our predecessors and work towards achieving FOMWAN’s vision of Leadership of Muslim women and promoting their welfare.”
The new leaders are tasked with pushing forward FOMWAN’s mission, focusing on the education, health, economic empowerment, and social welfare of Muslim women and youth.
With Hamza at the helm, FOMWAN aims to broaden its influence both within Nigeria and internationally.
A Broader Impact
Alongside the National Amirah, the State Amirahs (State Presidents) join the National Executive Council. This council also includes the Naibatul Amirah (Vice President), Secretary-General, Financial Secretary, Da’awah/Welfare Officer, Legal Adviser, and a Public Relations Officer.
Founded in October 1985 by educated Muslim women, FOMWAN is a faith-based, non-profit organization.
The group focuses on spreading Islamic teachings and empowering Muslim women through education and support, acting as a civil society umbrella body for them in Nigeria.
