The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed 486 pharmaceutical premises in Niger State. The closures followed a sweeping inspection across nine local government areas.
Dr Suleiman Ciroma, Head of Enforcement at PCN, announced the action in Minna. He said the exercise was part of efforts to sanitise the drug distribution system.
“The sealed premises included 69 pharmacies, 127 patent medicine shops, and 290 unlicensed outlets,” he stated.
The enforcement team inspected 672 premises in Agaie, Bida, Tafa, Chanchaga, Lapai, Paikoro, Bosso, Suleja, and Gurara.
“The inspection revealed illegal operations of unlicensed outlets, unauthorised clinical practice, non-compliance with regulations, sale of controlled drugs and unapproved training of apprentices,” Ciroma said.
One individual was arrested for obstructing PCN officials during the operation. He will be prosecuted according to the law.
The inspection focused on ethics, staff qualifications, and facility standards. PCN said the goal is to ensure safe and quality pharmaceutical services.
Public Advised to Verify Drug Outlets
Ciroma urged Nigerians to patronise only licensed premises. He said licensed outlets can be identified by the display of current PCN certificates.
“We want the public to be vigilant. Always check for a valid license before buying medicines,” he advised.
He praised Niger residents for their cooperation and assured that the nationwide enforcement will continue.
“This exercise will help check the circulation of substandard and falsified medicines,” he added.
PCN has also begun regulating online drug sales, following the rise of digital pharmacies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
