Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has explained that his recent remark on politicians promising one term in office was not targeted at Peter Obi.
The governor spoke during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday. He said his comments were in the context of debates on zoning within Anambra politics.
Soludo said politicians often try to lure voters with promises of serving just one term. But according to him, such pledges amount to deceiving the electorate.
“They came with that argument in 2017 when my predecessor was running for a second time,” he said. “Anambra people were quick to see through the disingenuity of that kind of promise. The fact is that we won 21 over 21 local governments in that election. Nobody bought that crap.”
He argued that campaign manifestos usually cannot be achieved in a single term, or sometimes even in twenty years. “You’re just playing at the people’s intelligence,” he said. “If anybody is saying that, it’s either he is deliberately deceitful or something is not working right upstairs.”
The governor stressed that his statement was about protecting the zoning arrangement in Anambra, which rotates power across senatorial districts, and not an attack on Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, whatever clarifications Gov. Soludo is making, youths from Agulu community in Anaocha LGA, Obi’s hometown, have cautioned politicians against making derogatory remarks about Peter Obi during their campaigns.
In a statement signed by their leaders, Maduagwu Eric-Kenny and Chamberlain Egoh, the group described attacks on Obi as unfounded and provocative.
“Peter Obi’s name commands respect not only in Nigerian politics but also on the global stage,” they wrote. “We will never allow anyone, regardless of position or influence, to diminish his image.”
The youths said many politicians who now mock Obi had once benefited from his generosity. They vowed that future attempts to malign him would be met with “organised, peaceful but resolute resistance.”
“Just as others guard their political elites with pride, the people of Agulu will continue to cherish and protect Obi as an identity that opens doors across Nigeria and beyond,” the statement concluded.
The back-and-forth reflects deepening political tensions in Anambra ahead of tight upcoming elections in November, that has pit the incumbent governor against political heavyweights like Mr Nicholas Ukachukwu of the federal ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
