Corps Member Assault: George Moghalu Calls for FG Intervention

Labour Party’s candidate in the November 8 Anambra governorship election, Dr. George Moghalu, has called for urgent federal intervention over what he described as “constant brutality against innocent citizens” by security outfits controlled by the Anambra State government.

Moghalu addressed reporters in Awka following the viral video of a female corps member who was allegedly assaulted by operatives. He demanded that the outfit be disbanded before the election, warning that public safety was at risk.

“The federal government should make a comment about this, more so as the lady is on a national assignment and should be protected. It should also intervene in the security situation in Anambra State,” he said.

“This Is One Case Too Many”

The LP candidate described the incident as shameful for both the state and the country.

“I was saddened by what I saw in the video concerning the lady because it is scandalous, not just to Anambra or the state government, but to every responsible person. It is unacceptable,” he said.

He insisted that no matter the alleged offence of the victim, the operatives had no justification for public humiliation.

“No matter what the lady may have done, it should have been better to arrest her in the normal way and hand her over to the police, and not brutalizing and bringing down her dignity,” he added.

Moghalu accused the outfit of operating without proper training. “I have said it many times that these people were not trained, which is why they should be disbanded, trained and indoctrinated to suit what we need in this state. This is one case too many. They have killed, threatened, extorted money from people and it is unacceptable to me,” he declared.

Where Is the Victim?

The former APC stalwart, now an LP candidate, noted that although reports suggest the operatives involved have been arrested, questions remain. “Where is the lady involved? Government should bring her to public domain for her to tell her story. This is a civilized community. That she is a youth corps member makes the case even worse because she is only serving her nation,” he said.

He also linked the existence of the security outfit to political interests. “It has become clear that the outfit was constituted to prosecute the election,” he alleged.

The controversy comes at a sensitive moment, as Anambra prepares for a tense governorship poll.

Nigeria has seen repeated debates over the role and accountability of state-backed vigilante groups, some of which have been accused of human rights abuses in the past. Police brutality led to the October 2020 #EndSARS protests, that was forcefully crushed by the previous regime of late President Muhammadu Buhari.

Since then, allegations of security highhandedness have persisted.

Moghalu urged the federal government to provide sufficient neutral security for the November election to ensure peace.
