Benue Ends Graduation Ceremonies for Kindergarten, Nursery, and Basic Schools

Possibly taking a cue from Imo State, which recently banned all graduation ceremonies in Kindergarten, Nursery, and Basic schools, the Benue State government has towed the same line.

The government says it wants to avoid the fuss and pressure these events might bring to young students.

Even similarly to Imo State, the government also stopped the use of customised books, which prevents them from handing them down to others.

The government want students to go back to using regular books that can be shared with future learners. This way, parents can save money, and learning materials won’t go to waste.

This announcement on the new Benue policy was made in an official statement by Mrs. Helen Zeramo from the Ministry of Education and Knowledge Management on August 15, 2025.

It was shared with school owners, parents, and other educational stakeholders across Benue.

Changes to After-School Lessons

The new rules also include changes for after-school lessons. Schools can’t force students to stay for extra classes unless their parents specifically agree. The idea is to respect family time and let kids be kids after school hours.

These updates apply from the start of the 2025/2026 academic year. So, schools have to follow these new policies from day one of the new term.

The policy also encourages older students to pass their books to younger ones, promoting a culture of sharing and resourcefulness among students.

Dialogue with Education Stakeholders

To ensure everyone is on the same page, a meeting is set for August 26, 2025. School proprietors, PTAs, and other stakeholders will come together to discuss these new policies and get ready for their implementation.

These changes are part of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia‘s plan to improve education and support families in Benue. The government hopes these changes will make a positive impact on students and their families.

What do you think about these educational changes in Benue State? Will they improve learning conditions for students, or do you foresee challenges? Share your thoughts in the comments!
