Zelensky Rejects Putin’s Moscow Peace Summit Proposal

More details have emerged about Vladimir Putin’s suggestion for a peace summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Moscow.

The Russian leader reportedly raised the idea during a phone call with former U.S. President Donald Trump. The call came as Trump hosted Zelensky and European leaders in Washington.

Sources revealed that “Putin mentioned Moscow” as a possible venue for the summit. Zelensky, however, immediately refused, saying he would not attend talks on Russian soil.

European leaders present in Washington also told Trump that the proposal “did not seem like a good idea.” They cited Russia’s ongoing attacks and lack of trust in Moscow’s intentions.

Did Putin really expect Zelensky to come to Moscow for a peace talk? Can Russia be a neutral ground for such talks in a war in which Russia is considered the aggressor? What’s your take?

Trump Pushes for Direct Talks

At the end of the White House summit, Trump said a direct meeting between Putin and Zelensky could be a step toward ending the war.

The war, now in its fourth year, has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, according to the United Nations. Trump urged fresh diplomacy, though many U.S. allies remain doubtful about Putin’s sincerity.

Zelensky has said repeatedly that he is ready for talks with Russia’s leader. But he insists on conditions that secure Ukraine’s sovereignty and safety.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov later told Russian state media that Putin was open to the “idea” of direct talks, but admitted that no framework had been agreed.

Ukraine continues to receive support from the U.S. and Europe, both militarily and financially, with aid already running into billions of dollars.

For many observers, the question remains: is Putin’s proposal genuine, or another tactic in a long war of attrition?
