The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has taken to the streets in a three-day peaceful protest.
Their demand is simple: justice for victims and urgent action on road safety.
The protest follows two deadly accidents in Auchi, Edo State, involving trucks owned by a cement company.
On August 12, Miss Ruth Otabor, a fresh graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, lost her leg in a tragic crash.
“She was hit by a cement truck. Her leg was amputated. She’s still fighting for her life,” said Usman Dende, NAPS spokesperson.
Just five days later, another truck accident claimed three lives and injured several others, including students.
NAPS said these incidents are no longer isolated. They are becoming a pattern.
“We can’t keep quiet while our members are dying. We must act,” Dende added.
Students Demand Safety Measures, Support for Victims
NAPS listed several demands. First, suspension and retraining of reckless truck drivers.
They also want full medical care for Ruth Otabor and other victims, including a motorcyclist injured in the crash.
“We need pedestrian bridges and speed bumps in student areas. These trucks must slow down,” the statement read.
They called for collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enforce safety rules.
Other demands include regular safety audits and strict punishment for drivers who break the law.
Dialogue Failed, Now We March — NAPS Declares
NAPS said they tried dialogue with the cement company and relevant authorities.
But after no action was taken, they chose peaceful protest.
“We are not violent. We just want to be heard. Our lives matter,” Dende said.
The protest began yesterday and will end tomorrow. Students across Nigeria are joining in solidarity.
