The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a new directive: all mobile phones must be switched off during takeoff and landing.
Flight mode is no longer acceptable. The order applies to all Nigerian airlines and is effective immediately.
This decision came after an emergency meeting of the National Civil Aviation Security Committee (NSASC) held in Abuja.
Captain Chris Najomo, Director-General of NCAA, made the announcement in the presence of airline operators, FAAN, NAMA, the Federal Ministry of Aviation, and other stakeholders.
“To avoid ambiguity and confusion, all mobile phones and other electric devices should be switched off during the critical stage of flight on all Nigerian airlines. No flight mode any longer,” Najomo said.
He directed airlines to update their operational manuals and submit them for NCAA approval.
Crew members are expected to inform passengers of the new rule. Passengers must obey crew instructions without argument.
Najomo warned against unruly behaviour. “Henceforth, things would not be as usual. If you are unruly, you are unruly.”
He stressed the need for continuous training of aviation personnel to improve safety and discipline.
Ibom Air Incident Under Investigation
During the meeting, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, addressed recent cases of passenger misconduct.
He said airport rules must be respected. “When one enters an airport terminal, the rules change.”
Director of Aviation Security Regulation, Dr Omogo Chinedu, reminded attendees that the committee is empowered by law to coordinate aviation security.
Meanwhile, NCAA has invited Comfort Emmanson, Juliana Edward, and Ibom Air cabin crew members for questioning.
Achimugu confirmed that Emmanson had already spoken with the Authority. She and her colleagues are expected to appear again today.
The incident reportedly occurred during a flight from Uyo to Lagos. The pilot did not call security after landing, as the issue seemed resolved before departure.
Achimugu assured stakeholders that NCAA will conduct a full investigation to uncover the truth.
