The Nigerian community abroad is in mourning after four young men lost their lives in separate incidents in Libya and South Africa.
In Tripoli, Libya, two Nigerians known as Collins and Osas were reported dead in what sources suspect was poisoning.
Collins and Osas had left Misrata on 20 July with another Nigerian friend. They travelled to Tripoli and were said to have lodged at a place called Oshofana, described by locals as a hub for underground activities.
After four days, their companion returned to Misrata alone. He later claimed he received a call that the two men had died after being poisoned.
Suspicion has trailed his account. A source said: “Given the nature of Oshofana, and knowing the kind of activities that go on there, some of us are not satisfied with his explanation. Investigations are still ongoing, and people are monitoring closely.”
The remains of Collins and Osas have since been buried in Libya.
South Africa: Gunmen Strike in Durban
In Durban, South Africa, two Nigerians identified as Austin and Ayo were brutally shot dead on Thursday, 9 July.
Reports said three masked gunmen stormed Austin’s office around 8 p.m., forced their way in, and shot both men at close range.
A friend of one of the victims, who gave his name as Fidelis, confirmed: “They died on the spot.”
The killings have again raised fears over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, a country that has witnessed frequent attacks on foreign nationals.
Fidelis urged the Nigerian government to do more through its embassies. He said consular support must go beyond words to real protection for citizens abroad.
