Ibadan received a royal homecoming on Monday. The Olubadan-elect, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, returned to the ancient city after the traditional 21 days of mourning for the late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
Supporters trooped out to welcome him at the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. From there, the former governor and senator made his way to his family house in Isale-Osi, a symbolic journey back to his roots.
By custom, the mourning of an Olubadan lasts 21 days before the next monarch begins official duties. That period ended with the passing of Oba Olakulehin, who joined his ancestors on June 7, 2025, barely two days after marking his 90th birthday.
The Olubadan throne remains one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional seats, not only because of its history but also because of the unique succession system in Ibadan, where the most senior chief in the line is elevated to the throne.
Now, the mantle has fallen on Oba Ladoja, a figure deeply loved in Ibadan politics and royalty alike.

Oba Ladoja, who once governed Oyo State and served as a senator, carries both political experience and royal heritage into his new role. Many Ibadan indigenes see his return as the beginning of another chapter in the city’s history.
