Worried about inflation? Where would you rather live? The answer is surprising.
Yobe State has emerged as the most affordable place to live and travel across Nigeria, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The bureau’s July 2025 report, released in Damaturu over the weekend, credited the drop in inflation and food prices for this ranking.
General inflation in the state fell from 13.5% to 11.43%. Food inflation also dropped from 17.9% in June to 15.1% in July.
The report linked the affordability to the success of the State Agricultural Empowerment Programme (SAEP), which has boosted food supply and income.
Over 5,300 farmers have benefited from the initiative, flooding markets with last year’s harvests and driving prices down.
“The agricultural empowerment initiative aims to make agriculture more attractive and affordable in sustaining the state’s economic growth and development,” the report stated.
Launched by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Governor Mai Mala Buni, SAEP has drawn many youths and women into farming.
The programme distributed tractors, harvesters, disc ploughs, harrows, land tillers, fertilisers, solar-powered irrigation pumps, and pesticides.
Irrigation Projects Target River Basins
Farmers are reinvesting their earnings into this year’s cropping season, focusing on irrigation farming in the Kumadugu/Yobe River Basins.
These basins cover Bade, Geidam, Bursari, and the Nguru wetlands—areas known for fertile soil and water access.
“The success of the Buni administration’s agricultural drive underscores the potential of targeting agricultural investments to ensure food security,” the report added.
With more food in circulation and transport costs low, Yobe’s economy is breathing easier.
