APGA Secures Landslide in Anambra By-Elections

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won a resounding victory in the Anambra South Senatorial and Onitsha North 1 State House of Assembly by-elections held on Saturday.

The results, released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, show APGA sweeping all wards across seven local government areas that make up Anambra South Senatorial District. The party also won decisively in Onitsha North 1 constituency.

The Anambra South senatorial seat became vacant after the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, while the Onitsha North 1 seat was left open following the tragic killing of its former occupant, Justice Azuka.

APGA candidate Emmanuel Nwachukwu secured 90,408 votes, defeating the APC with 19,812 votes and the YPP with 6,538. Announcing the result, INEC Returning Officer Prof. Frank Ojiako declared: “Emmanuel Nwachukwu, the candidate of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby returned elected.”

In the state assembly by-election, Prof. Ibiam Ekpe of INEC confirmed that APGA’s Ifeoma Azikiwe polled 7,774 votes to defeat her closest rival from the ADC, who got 1,909 votes. “Ifeoma Azikiwe emerged winner with 7,774 votes to defeat her closest rival, Justice Azuka,” he announced.

This victory means Nwachukwu will now represent Anambra South in the Senate, while Azikiwe takes her place in the State House of Assembly.

“We Do Not Take Your Support for Granted” – Soludo

Anambra Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, celebrated the outcome in a Facebook post on Sunday. He described the win as historic for APGA, especially as it marks the first time the party will represent Anambra South in the Senate.

“Yesterday, APGA swept the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election! Over 75 per cent of votes cast in our favour, winning 99.99 per cent of polling units and all 118 wards across seven LGAs,” the governor wrote.

He added: “Onitsha North Constituency 1 was another landmark victory, as APGA won all eight wards. We do not take your support for granted.”

Soludo congratulated the winners, saying: “Congratulations to Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu, the very first elected Senator of Anambra South on the platform of APGA since the creation of the party, and also to Mimi Ifeoma Azikiwe, the member-elect for Onitsha North 1 State Constituency. Thank you, ndi Anambra!”
