More than 100 alleged political troublemakers aiming to disrupt the Kano bye-election have been caught by joint security teams. These arrests helped to restore order, ensuring the voting could go ahead without further issues.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) noted that some areas experienced delayed voting since some people attempted to steal electoral materials.
INEC is holding bye-elections and supplementary elections in two state constituencies, Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa, to fill empty seats in the Kano State House of Assembly.
In Bagwai Local Government Area, Amb. Zango Abdu, the Kano INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, spoke to journalists. He shared his overall satisfaction with how the election was conducted, despite a few disruptions.
Abdu praised the strong security setup at the polling units and mentioned the arrest of over 100 suspects for different electoral crimes.
“Expectations were very high coming through from Kano to Bagwai, but I am very impressed with the security arrangement. I can see massive deployment on patrol. We saw several thugs rounded up by the police on our way here, and we are happy the process is going on peacefully. More than 100 thugs have been arrested and will be prosecuted. Shanono is now stable after initial disruption, and voting has since commenced,” he said.
The INEC official admitted there were some issues, like vehicle breakdowns and attempts to disrupt movements of sensitive materials. Despite these hiccups, voting began on time in most locations.
“In all cases, you must have isolated issues. Sensitive materials arrived polling units and voting commenced at 8:30 a.m. in most places. Although we had cases of breakdowns and disruptions, security agencies quickly stabilized the situation and the process continued,” Abdu explained.
