President Bola Tinubu’s team believes the tide is turning in the South-East. Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communication, says the region will deliver up to two million votes in 2027.
In the 2023 election, Tinubu got only 127,370 votes from the South-East. But Bwala insists that things will be different next time.
“You see the South-East, I guarantee you, President Bola Tinubu is going to get more than four times, if not six times, the value of the vote he got. He’ll get up to two million,” he said during a live interview on Channels Television.
Bwala dismissed fears about Peter Obi’s influence in the region. He claimed Obi’s support base has shrunk.
“Whether Peter Obi is a ticket bearer of the party, he has lost more than 50% of his votes because they were not votes built on agenda and politics. They were built on rhetoric and division, and Nigerian people’s eyes are open.”
He also alleged that Obi may not even secure a party ticket. “He’s not going to get a ticket in any of the parties—ADC, PDP, LP. That is Peter Obi,” Bwala said.
Obi’s recent alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stirred political realignments. He’s now the coalition’s coordinator in the South-East, but Bwala believes he’ll only serve as Director-General.
Governors’ Defections and Tinubu’s Rising Popularity
Bwala pointed to recent defections of governors from opposition parties to the APC. He said these moves will help Tinubu gain ground in the South-East.
Governors from Delta, Enugu, and Akwa Ibom are reportedly warming up to the APC. Some have already declared support for Tinubu’s second-term bid.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, also recently weighed in. He said Tinubu deserves “90% of the South-East votes” due to road projects and fair treatment of the region.
