OAU Mourns Dentistry Student Who Took His Life Over Exam Result

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been thrown into mourning. A Part Two Dentistry student, Ajibola Ibitayo, reportedly ended his life after failing his exams for the second time.

The tragedy happened on August 12, 2025, shortly after the release of the semester results. Ajibola, whose father is a medical doctor, allegedly injected himself at their home in Ejigbo, Osun State.

The Dentistry Students’ Association confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its President, Adebayo Idris. “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry,” the statement read.

“We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of his examination result.”

Ajibola had already repeated Part Two last session. The new result meant he would have to repeat the same class again. The weight of academic pressure proved too heavy.

“This is a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face,” Idris added. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him.”

Mental Health and the Need for Support

The association urged students to support one another and seek help. “Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Simeon Bamire also reacted. He said setbacks are part of life and should not be seen as the end. “Failure is an opportunity to redirect your path toward success,” he said.

Ajibola’s death has reopened conversations about mental health in Nigerian universities. According to The Abuja Inquirer, academic pressure, financial stress, and lack of support systems are pushing many students to the edge.

So sad, isn’t it? What more can we do to support one another in these stressful times, especially for those who are most economically, socially, emotionally and mentally vulnerable? We invite you to air your views in the comments section.
