The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has cleared up rumours about investigating former governor Udom Emmanuel. Deputy Speaker Kufreabasi Edidem addressed these rumours in a statement from Uyo, saying there’s no plan to start any probe.
Edidem explained that there is no committee set up to investigate Emmanuel, despite what some media outlets reported.
He said the August 11th newspaper story claiming the House was investigating the former governor simply isn’t true. It’s a speculative piece with no factual basis.
What really happened on August 7th was that Mkpat Enin State Constituency’s representative, Mr. Uwem Imoh-Ita, highlighted a payment issue. Employees at the Coconut Plantation haven’t been paid for seven months.
In response, an ad hoc committee was formed to look into this and will report back in a month.
The statement encouraged media outlets to double-check facts with official legislative sources before publishing news.
Mistaking speculation for facts can harm the credibility of democratic institutions, and Edidem reminded journalists to separate facts from sensationalism. “Journalism is a noble profession with its strong ethical bent,” he emphasized.
