Afrobeats continues to take over the world. The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) has unveiled a strong Best Afrobeats lineup, showing the genre’s massive growth and influence.
The awards return on Monday, September 8, live from New York’s UBS Arena, airing on MTV (DStv Channel 130) at 00:00 WAT.
Nigerian star Asake leads with two nominations — “Active” with Travis Scott and “Get It Right” with Tems. Burna Boy also lands two nods — “TaTaTa” featuring Travis Scott for Best Afrobeats, and “Higher” for Video for Good.
South Africa’s Tyla earns two nominations for “PUSH 2 START” in Best Afrobeats and Best Choreography.
Rema is recognised for “Baby (Is It A Crime)”, while Wizkid teams up with Brent Faiyaz for “Piece Of My Heart”.
MOLIY, Silent Addy, Skillibeng & Shenseea join with their “Shake It To The Max (FLY)” remix. This year’s list blends African rhythm with global artistry.
Afrobeats now dominates charts, sells out arenas, and shapes global pop culture. The VMAs are another sign that Africa’s sound is here to stay.
