The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected ritualist during a raid at his shrine in Uruan Local Government Area.
Command spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, said the suspect, 30-year-old Cletus Effiong Bassey, was caught supplying charms and “bullet repellers” to armed robbers.
“On July 29, 2025, at about 6:51 pm, operatives acted on credible intelligence and apprehended Bassey at his shrine in Nung Oku Village, Uruan LGA,” the statement read.
Police said a search of Bassey’s compound led to the recovery of a fabricated single-barrel gun. “Bassey is suspected of ritual activities and aiding criminals with protective charms,” DSP John added.
The suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue. Police did not reveal if other accomplices have been identified.
This arrest comes amid heightened public concern over the link between ritual practices and violent crimes in the state.
Residents have been urged to report suspicious activities to law enforcement.
