Restructure Now or Risk Collapse by 2027, Nwodo Tells Nigeria

Former Minister of Information, John Nnia Nwodo, has warned that Nigeria may not survive politically before the 2027 general elections without urgent constitutional reform.

Speaking in Abuja at the launch of two books by veteran journalist Ike Abonyi, Nwodo described Nigeria’s current arrangement as “a unitary constitution in disguise.”

He urged a restructuring of power to give each region full control over its resources and development, while paying taxes for “essential federal responsibilities like external defence, foreign affairs, customs, and immigration.”

Nwodo warned: “If we head into 2027 without addressing these structural imbalances, there may be no election, and worse still, no country.”

According to him, true federalism is the only way to ensure fairness, efficiency, and stability in governance.

Economic Decay Driving Instability

The former minister lamented that Nigeria’s economic woes are deepening, pointing to collapsing infrastructure, mass youth unemployment, and one of the world’s lowest life expectancies.

“We are bleeding billions annually due to poor infrastructure. Life expectancy is now one of the lowest globally. Our youth are unemployed and frustrated. Something must give,” he said.

He called for urgent investment in education that fits the demands of today’s economy, insisting that “every Nigerian child should be digitally literate.”

Nwodo also urged a return to agriculture and vocational skills training as a sustainable way to tackle unemployment and restore food security.

Mr Nwodo was also once the president-general of the apec Igbo socio-cultural organization, the Ohaneze Ndigbo.

The event drew political leaders, academics, and civil society figures, many of whom echoed his concerns.

They argued that without immediate restructuring, Nigeria risks further instability, possibly making the 2027 elections irrelevant.
