The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disowned a trending document claiming 151 secondary schools had their students’ 2025 WASSCE results withheld for malpractice.
The list, which went viral on Monday, August 4, named several elite and government-owned schools across the country.
It also bore a signature attributed to Dr. Florence Ajayi, allegedly WAEC’s Director of Examination Malpractice and Irregularities.
The letter, dated August 4, 2025, was titled “Urgent notice to the following secondary schools regarding withheld results.” It instructed principals of the affected schools to report to the council’s Lagos Zonal Office within 10 working days.
It further stated: “All school principals are to appear before the WAEC Investigative Panel on or before August 16th, 2025, with supporting documentation and the affected candidates’ exam scripts (where applicable).”
WAEC Responds: “That List Is Fake”
WAEC promptly responded via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle @waecnigeria, calling the document false and unauthorised.
“Kindly ignore any message listing schools whose results were supposedly cancelled,” the statement read.
It added firmly: “WAEC will never ask any centre to bring scripts of candidates to the office. Where would they get them from?”
The council also warned the public not to accept any message not released through WAEC’s official handles or accredited media.
Several parents and school authorities who saw the list have been left confused, raising urgent questions on social media about its authenticity.

On the same Monday, WAEC had officially announced that 192,089 results were being withheld—representing 9.75% of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the 2025 May/June WASSCE.
WAEC’s Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, revealed that a significant number of candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice, hence the withheld results.
According to Dangut, only 38.32% of candidates got credits and above in five core subjects including English and Mathematics.
That figure is a steep drop from 72.12% in 2024.
He linked the decline to “the new anti-malpractice measures strictly enforced during the 2025 examinations.”
WAEC reiterated that all withheld results are under investigation, and no school will be prematurely blacklisted without due process.
