A 2-year-old girl was rescued alive from a suitcase inside a moving long-distance bus in New Zealand. The shocking discovery happened when the InterCity vehicle stopped briefly in Kaiwaka, a quiet settlement north of Auckland.
A passenger had requested to access their luggage. The driver opened the compartment and noticed one of the suitcases moving slightly.
To his horror, a little girl was inside.
She was very hot but showed no visible injuries. “The child appeared physically unharmed but had clearly been in distress,” said Detective Inspector Simon Harrison.
She was quickly rushed to a hospital, where doctors began emergency care. She remained under medical observation as of Sunday night, August 3.
Woman Faces Court Over Child Neglect
The police arrested a woman in connection with the incident. She has been charged with “ill-treatment or neglect of a child” and is expected in court on Monday.
Her identity has not yet been revealed. Investigators also withheld how long the child had been in the luggage compartment or the full route the bus had taken.
Local reports say she was traveling alone with the child and had not informed the bus company of any special needs or requests regarding the toddler.
The bus company, InterCity, confirmed one of its vehicles was involved in the case. The company allows children under 3 years to travel for free, provided they are seated on an adult’s lap.
