Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has celebrated the D’Tigress for their outstanding semi-final performance at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket tournament.
In a personal message shared on his verified social media handle, Obi wrote:
“Congratulations, D’Tigress. You gave an incredible semi-final performance. I watched with all smiles and so much pride as you came from behind in the third quarter to show true dominance and secure your place in the finals.
“You have made Nigeria proud yet again—10 years unbeaten is nothing but dominance.
As you prepare for the finals, we are all with you, cheering you to make history once again.
Go finish what you started, Nigeria stands with you. Bring the trophy home.”
Obi’s words captured the spirit of national pride and unity as the D’Tigress extended their incredible winning streak to a full decade in African women’s basketball.
The team, known for its grit and composure under pressure, rallied from behind to defeat Senegal 75–68 in a thrilling semi-final clash at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
A Decade of Dominance
D’Tigress edged the first quarter 22–17 and narrowly took the second 21–20 to lead 43–37 at halftime.
Senegal responded with a dominant third quarter, outscoring Nigeria 21–9 and entering the final stretch with a six-point lead. But Nigeria bounced back with a 23–10 run in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
The victory is Nigeria’s ninth consecutive win over Senegal in AfroBasket history and extended their unbeaten run in the tournament to 28 games since 2015.
It also secured their fifth straight final appearance and qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments.
Obi praised not only their on-court excellence but also their role as ambassadors of Nigerian resilience and determination.
