The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians travelling to the United States: “Stick to your visa rules, or face serious consequences.”
The advisory, signed by NIS spokesperson AS Akinlabi, responds to growing worries from U.S. immigration officials about the misuse of visas by Nigerian nationals.
The NIS emphasized that the U.S. continues its security checks even after you land.
“Breach of visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, including removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel,” the advisory warned.
This warning is especially important for Nigerian students and tourists—two of the largest groups travelling to America. 🇳🇬🎓🌍
For Students: Stay in School or Risk Visa Trouble
Students must remain enrolled and active in their academic programs. The NIS cautioned against skipping classes or switching schools without proper approval.
“Nigerian students in the U.S. must remain in active study. Withdrawal, absenteeism, or change of academic programme without notification may lead to visa cancellation and loss of future eligibility.”
Education-based visa holders caught violating these terms could lose their U.S. status for good.
For Tourists: No Room for ‘Birth Tourism’
The NIS also addressed the rising issue of “birth tourism.” That is, when pregnant women visit the U.S. just to give birth and secure citizenship for their baby.
U.S. consular officers are cracking down hard on this.
“U.S. consular officers will deny tourist visa applications if they believe the primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the United States to obtain U.S. citizenship for the child,” the statement read.
The American government sees this as visa fraud. And the price for this mistake? A cancelled visa—and no second chances.
