The United States Embassy in Nigeria has raised alarm over the spending habits of some state governors, accusing them of deepening inequality and eroding public trust.
In a post shared on its official X account on Tuesday, the embassy spotlighted an investigative report by The Africa Report titled “Nigeria’s Ruling Class Splashes Billions on Government Houses.”
The report paints a troubling picture of how political elites are living large while ordinary Nigerians struggle under harsh economic reforms.
“While Nigerians are tightening their belts, the same cannot be said of the ruling class,” the report stated.
Oyo and Gombe Under Fire
The report cited Oyo State, where Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration approved ₦63.4 billion to renovate the Government House. The state described the current structure as “an embarrassment and unbefitting.” The project is part of preparations for Oyo’s 50th anniversary in 2026.
In Gombe State—ranked among Nigeria’s poorest—Governor Inuwa Yahaya is constructing a new ultra-modern residence for ₦14.9 billion. Another ₦14.23 billion has been earmarked for a new House of Assembly complex.
The embassy quoted transparency advocates, saying: “Such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust.”
Civic groups like BudgIT and CISLAC have also condemned the trend, warning that governors are prioritising luxury over essential services like education, health, and agriculture.
Public Reaction and Growing Scrutiny
The embassy’s post has stirred debate online. Many Nigerians praised the move, saying it reflects what citizens have long suspected—that leaders are disconnected from the people’s suffering.
“It’s unacceptable. Many Nigerians are skipping meals, yet public officials are upgrading their living spaces with taxpayers’ money,” said activist Samuel Aye.
Others called for tighter oversight and budget transparency, urging elected officials to redirect funds toward public welfare.
Meanwhile, critics of the embassy’s intervention argue that it meddles in Nigeria’s internal affairs. But the growing chorus for accountability suggests that citizens are no longer willing to stay silent.
