President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Prof. Chinedu Mmom as the Vice-Chancellor of the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), located in Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, Rivers State.
Prof. Mmom is a Professor of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Port Harcourt.
He previously served as Rivers State Commissioner for Education and has published extensively on environmental degradation, flood vulnerability, and ecological restoration in the Niger Delta.
The appointment was announced alongside other principal officers and governing council members.
Prof. Don Mon Baridam, also from UniPort, will serve as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council.
FUET Set to Begin Academic Activities in September
The university was signed into law by President Tinubu on February 3, 2025, as part of efforts to address environmental injustice and promote sustainable development in Ogoniland.

FUET will admit its first batch of students in September 2025. The institution is expected to offer interdisciplinary programmes in clean energy, environmental science, and sustainable technology.

- Dr. Mpigi Monday Douglas (Registrar)
- Zoryii Josco Nwaimanie (Bursar)
- Dr. Saghanen Ntogo G. B. (Librarian)
The governing council reflects Nigeria’s regional diversity, with members from North Central, South West, South East, and North West.
During the signing of the university’s bill, Tinubu said: “This is more than the creation of a university. It’s a reaffirmation of our unwavering commitment to the people of Ogoni, the Niger Delta, and the entire nation.”
The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was also acknowledged for his role in supporting the bill’s passage and his broader contributions to national development.
