Senator Aniekan Condemns Ghana Protest Against Nigerians

Senator Bassey Aniekan has condemned the recent protests in Ghana calling for the deportation of Nigerians, describing the action as unfair and rooted in dangerous generalisations.

A viral video shows hundreds of Ghanaians marching through Accra, holding placards with messages like “Nigerians are kidnapping and using people for rituals” and “Our health at stake due to mass prostitution.” The protest has triggered anxiety among Nigerians living in Ghana and their families back home.

Aniekan, who chairs the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, urged restraint. “Nigerians are hardworking people and not criminals as purported,” he said. “They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves. While there may be a few bad individuals among them, the generality of Nigerians are peaceful and law-abiding people.”

He stressed the historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Ghana, saying “Ghana and Nigeria are brothers and should continue to live in peace.” He added, “Dialogue has proven countless times to be a tool for peace and should be deployed.”

The senator warned against misinformation, especially videos alleging destruction of Nigerian-owned shops. “There is no verified evidence supporting such claims,” he said.

He urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and avoid retaliation. “Let us resist any urge for reprisals. The matter is receiving diplomatic attention at the highest level,” he said.

Senator Aniekan confirmed that Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, is already engaging Ghanaian authorities. He praised both countries’ high commissioners for their swift diplomatic efforts.

Why is ECOWAS silent in the midst of these anti-Nigeria protests? Shouldn’t the subregional body enforce stronger protections for migrants within member states? What are your views?
