The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has auctioned six forfeited properties linked to drug trafficking, raising over ₦139 million from two successful bids.
The public auction, held on Tuesday 29th July 2025 at the NDLEA National Headquarters in Abuja, drew pre-qualified auctioneers, civil society groups, media, and government officials. The properties were either acquired through drug proceeds or used to commit the crimes.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), represented by Agency Secretary Mr. Shadrack Haruna, said the auction was part of efforts to dismantle drug cartels by targeting their wealth.
“This auction is part of our broader commitment to transparency and justice,” he said. “Beyond prosecuting drug offenders, we are committed to ensuring that the financial incentives that drive these crimes are neutralized through legal forfeiture.”
He added: “This serves as both punishment and deterrence. When drug traffickers know they stand to lose everything, including their ill-gotten assets, it sends a stronger message than imprisonment alone.”
Eight properties across Lagos, Kano, Ondo, and Ogun were listed. However, two houses in Lekki and Ikorodu were withdrawn due to pending appeals. Of the remaining six, only two attracted bids above reserve prices, selling for a combined ₦139 million. The rest received no bids or offers below benchmark.
Transparent Process and Integrity Checks
Umar Yakubu of the Centre for Transparency and Integrity Watch praised the NDLEA’s process as “open, credible, and compliant with international best practices.” He urged the agency to continue using such exercises to educate the public on the consequences of drug crimes.
Director of Proceeds of Crime Management, Jerry Iorwa Aernan, said all auctioneers were vetted by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and passed integrity checks. He warned that assets must not return to original owners through backdoor deals.
Successful bidders are required to pay 10% of their bid value within 14 days to confirm interest. Full payment must follow within the stipulated timeframe.
