Microsoft has unveiled a major update to its Edge browser, introducing Copilot Mode—an AI-powered assistant designed to enhance user productivity, navigation, and search experience.
The new feature allows users to interact with an integrated AI panel directly from the new tab page, performing tasks like summarising webpages, comparing tabs, scheduling bookings, and managing browser content—all within a single interface.
Voice input and contextual awareness are also supported, enabling Edge to respond based on currently open tabs or browsing history (with user permission).
Copilot Mode is powered by a blend of Microsoft’s proprietary large language models and OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology.
“It doesn’t just wait idly for you to click but anticipates what you might want to do next,” Microsoft said in its announcement.
New Features That Make Edge Smarter
Alongside Copilot Mode, Microsoft also rolled out:
- Smart Chat Summaries: Quickly condense long articles or documents via right-click, saving time and reducing clutter.
- AI Theme Generator: Create custom themes using text prompts. The tool uses Microsoft Designer and DALL·E 3.0 to generate visuals.
- Enhanced PDF Tools: Summarize documents or auto-organize reading material using AI, ideal for students and professionals.
- Security Boosts: A new scareware blocker and stronger data protection tools for enterprise users.
- Performance Upgrades: A reported 40% speed boost, with faster page load times via Edge’s new WebUI 2.0 engine. The new architecture reduces JavaScript load and improves responsiveness across 13 browser features.
Copilot also supports natural voice navigation. Users can speak directly to the browser to open tabs, compare products, or locate information. Microsoft plans to expand Copilot’s capabilities to include booking services and managing errands using saved credentials—with user consent.
The features are currently rolling out across Windows and macOS versions of Edge. Microsoft says the goal is to make Edge not just faster, but “smarter and more useful in everyday life.”
