The Social Democratic Party (SDP) – the party former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai only joined in May, has expelled him from the party, and not only that, barred him from all party affairs for the next – you’re reading it right, 30 years!
The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) said the decision followed El-Rufai’s “false representation and impersonation” as a member, despite never registering at his ward as required by law.
SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, said El-Rufai “forged his own documents and self-registered”, claiming to be “number 001 in the SDP membership register of Unguwar Sarki Ward” in Kaduna North LGA.
Forgery, Coalition Politics, and Internal Crisis
The party accused El-Rufai of using photo ops with suspended leaders to mislead the public. He allegedly promoted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition while parading himself as an SDP member.
“He has been illegitimately trading with the name of the SDP in various forums,” the statement read. The NWC said his actions led to “disunity, distrust, intrigues, and manipulations” within the party.
SDP also claimed El-Rufai sponsored an “illegal NEC meeting” on July 25, aimed at dragging the party into a coalition “through the back door.”
The party warned INEC and other agencies to disregard any claims by El-Rufai regarding SDP membership until July 28, 2055.The SDP said it remains committed to “national patriotism, ideological clarity, and principled opposition.” It urged Nigerians who share these values to join the party through lawful means.
“El-Rufai is hereby banished and banned from applying for membership, identifying with the name, insignia, logo, symbol, mark, or any activities, organs, agencies, and institutions of the SDP,” the statement concluded.
