Lagosians should brace up for frequent blackouts over the next 25 days as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) begins critical maintenance work on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line.
According to the TCN, the exercise, approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the National Independent System Operator (NISO), will run daily from 8am to 5pm, starting Monday, July 28 through Thursday, August 21, 2025.
The upgrade involves installing an Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre cable on the transmission line.
TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed this in a statement posted on the company’s official X page.
“The upgrade involves the installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre cable on the Omotosho/Ikeja West 330kV transmission line, scheduled from July 28 to August 21, from 8am to 5pm,” the statement read.
Although power will be restored after each day’s work, TCN admitted that Lagos residents will experience inconsistent electricity supply throughout the maintenance period.
Why the Maintenance Is Necessary
Despite the temporary inconvenience, the company said the project is necessary to enhance grid reliability.
“Upon completion, the upgrade will enable full operationalisation of the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, enhancing real-time monitoring and management of the grid,” the agency noted.
The SCADA system, once fully operational, is expected to significantly reduce response time to faults and support smarter, real-time power flow adjustments across the national grid.
The affected power line is one of the major transmission routes that supply electricity to Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, and the country’s most populous city.
The TCN also noted that all other circuits would remain functional during the project to ensure power is not entirely cut off.
DisCos Warn of Load Shedding, Apologise
Following the announcement, both Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) and Ikeja Electric (IE) issued notices to customers.
EKEDC stated, “Kindly be informed that there will be a planned outage by our partner, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), from Monday, 28th July to Thursday 21st August, 2025 between 08:00–15:00 hrs daily. This is to enable work to be safely carried out on the Omotosho/Ikeja West 330kV power line.”
The company apologised to customers, saying the impact would be “intermittent outage and load shedding across its network.”
Ikeja Electric echoed the same message in a public notice signed by its management.
“Please be informed that Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) will carry out scheduled maintenance on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line from Monday July 28 to Thursday August 21, 2025, between the hours of 8am and 5pm daily,” it read.
“During this period, customers may experience intermittent power supply and load shedding across our network due to the planned TCN outage. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause.”
This announcement has already drawn concern from many Lagos residents, especially small business owners who rely heavily on electricity for daily operations.
