The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has concluded its 54th convocation ceremony, awarding degrees to a total of 11,713 graduates across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The week-long event ran from July 22 to July 26, 2025, across the Nsukka and Enugu campuses.
According to Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oguejiofo Ujam, “A total of 9,821 students received first degrees and diplomas, while 1,892 postgraduates were also honoured.”
Out of the undergraduate cohort, 167 earned First Class Honours. Another 3,485 graduated with Second Class Upper Division, 5,217 with Second Class Lower, 739 with Third Class, and 33 with Pass degrees.
An additional 180 students received unclassified degrees in professional fields such as medicine, law, and veterinary medicine.
For the postgraduate arm, UNN conferred 616 PhDs, 1,101 Master’s degrees, and 133 postgraduate diplomas. The ceremony also featured the conferment of honorary doctorates and the title of Professor Emeritus on distinguished Nigerians.
Convocation Lecture and Institutional Milestones
The convocation lecture, delivered by Mr. Ukandu Eme Ukandu, CEO of FirstCap Limited, was titled “Educated to Rise: From Local Struggle to Global Strength.” He urged industries to see young minds as “reinforcements for growth” and called on government to “champion equity and opportunity.”
Prof. Ujam used the occasion to announce the establishment of a new Directorate of Grants and Scholarships.
“This directorate now coordinates vital funding opportunities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students—not only from Nigeria but also from across Africa, Asia, and Europe,” he said.
The directorate aims to attract external research funding, support student scholarships, and foster global academic exchange. UNN has already begun partnerships with international organisations and corporate bodies to support the initiative.
The university also revealed it spends ₦200 million monthly on electricity across its three campuses. To address this, UNN signed an MoU with the Rural Electrification Agency for a 10-megawatt solar power project.
