Former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has responded to remarks credited to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, insisting he doesn’t need permission from any official to visit any part of Nigeria.
Obi made this known in Onitsha on Thursday during a ceremony at his alma mater, Christ the King College (CKC), where he presented a ₦50 million cheque to support the school’s infrastructure.
The donation, jointly made with other CKC Old Boys, is aimed at upgrading the school’s facilities and creating better learning conditions for students.
CKC, founded in 1932, has produced several prominent Nigerians, including Obi himself, former Rivers State Governor Peter Odili, and former Anambra Governor Willie Obiano.
“I am not afraid of visiting any state in Nigeria,” Obi said. “Especially when the purpose is to support causes that contribute to nation-building, such as education, health, and poverty alleviation.”
Obi’s comments followed his recent visit to Benin, which reportedly stirred political reactions in Edo State. He dismissed any suggestion that he must “seek clearance” before visiting a state in the federation.
“I went to Benin to invest in a better life for the people,” he clarified. “If they have good doctors and nurses, life will be better for them. What I expect the governor to do is to complement efforts aimed at improving society.”
₦50 Million Donation to Christ the King College
During the event, Obi emphasized that his gift to CKC was a heartfelt show of gratitude to a school that had deeply shaped his life.
“This school helped form the values I and many others still hold dear today — discipline, moral grounding, and academic excellence. Supporting it is a way of giving back,” he said.
He urged other Nigerians to support their former schools, noting that the responsibility for education should not rest solely on government shoulders.
The Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, who is also an alumnus of CKC, received the donation on behalf of the school. He thanked Obi and the Old Boys for their continued dedication to education and national development.
In his words: “You have reminded us that education is not the past — it is the future we all must build together.”
CKC Students Praise Obi’s Gesture
The event ended on a high note as students of CKC cheered and celebrated the donation. Senior Prefect, Master Ejike Ekene, praised Obi as a mentor and source of inspiration.
“Sir, you are a role model to us. We are grateful for your kindness and we will not let you down,” the young prefect said.
This gesture by Obi adds to his growing record of philanthropy in education and health — areas he often describes as the backbone of national progress.
