Rashford Joins Barcelona on Loan, Ends Chapter with ManU

Marcus Rashford has officially joined Barcelona on a season-long loan from Manchester United.

The 27-year-old forward will wear the No. 14 shirt and becomes the first English player to sign for the Catalan giants since Gary Lineker in 1986.

United confirmed the move on Wednesday, July 23, saying: “Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan for the duration of the 2025/26 season.”

The deal includes an option for Barcelona to make the transfer permanent next summer for £30.3 million.

Rashford accepted a 15% pay cut, allowing Barça to cover his full wages—reportedly around €14 million gross.

From Villa Revival to Camp Nou Dreams

Rashford spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, where he scored four goals and provided six assists in 17 matches.

His performances earned praise from Unai Emery and helped Villa reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

He trained with his new teammates on Tuesday and was expected to travel to Japan for Barcelona’s pre-season tour. However, the club cancelled the Japan leg due to a breach of contract by the promoter.

Rashford may now debut in South Korea against FC Seoul on July 31 or Daegu FC on August 4.

“It’s a club where dreams come true,” Rashford said during his unveiling. “They win big prizes and what the club stands for really means a lot to me.”

Barcelona won La Liga and the Copa del Rey last season under Hansi Flick. Rashford joins a squad featuring Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Lewandowski, and is expected to compete for a spot on the left wing or as a striker.

A Fresh Start After United Fallout

Rashford hasn’t played for Manchester United since December 2024, after falling out with manager Ruben Amorim.

Amorim once said he’d rather start his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach than Rashford due to poor effort in training.

The move to Barcelona offers Rashford a clean slate. He leaves United with 138 goals in 426 appearances, ranking 15th on the club’s all-time scorers list.

He also won five major trophies, including the Europa League and two FA Cups.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco said: “We like Rashford,” confirming the club’s long-standing interest. The loan gives Barça flexibility, while Rashford gets a chance to revive his career at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
