The Nigerian Senate has adjourned for its annual recess, which will last for two months.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, made the announcement in plenary on Thursday, July 24, saying the Red Chamber will reconvene on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
“This is the time to go on that road inspection and write all your reports,” Akpabio told senators.
He urged them to complete pending reports and conduct oversight visits to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). He also directed ad hoc and standing committees to continue their work during the recess.
Akpabio reminded APC senators to attend the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Presidential Villa. He stressed that the recess was not a holiday but a working break to deepen legislative performance.
The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, moved the motion for adjournment, which was unanimously adopted.
The break is in line with the legislative calendar and mirrors the earlier adjournment of the House of Representatives.
Reps Also Adjourn, Urged to Engage Constituents
The House of Representatives commenced its annual recess earlier on Wednesday, July 23.
The motion to proceed on the two-month break was moved by House Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere and seconded by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu presided over the session.
Kalu urged lawmakers to use the break to reconnect with their constituents, monitor federal projects, and address pressing local concerns. “Send my regards to your families and communities,” he said.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen described the recess as “an opportunity to strengthen our bond with the people we serve and ensure effective representation.”
He encouraged members to conduct town halls and oversight visits across Nigeria’s 360 federal constituencies.
The recess follows a busy legislative period that included the approval of a $347 million loan for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and tributes to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Both chambers are expected to reconvene on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
