The Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA) on Tuesday paid tributes to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a significant figure in Nigeria’s political history.
The group spoke during a condolence visit to the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg, where they signed the condolence register and offered prayers for the late leader.
NUSA, the apex body of Nigerians in South Africa, said in a statement made available to NAN in Abuja that the delegation was led by its President General, Mr Smart Nwobi.
Other officials in the delegation were the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Ekos Akpokabayen, and George Omagbemi, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President General of NUSA.
The group said the Nigerian leader would be remembered for his service for years to come. “President Buhari’s legacy is one that will echo through generations,” Nwobi said during the visit.
A Moment of Reflection for Nigerians Abroad
NUSA said its visit and condolence message were a show of unity and respect, reflecting the commitment of Nigerians in the diaspora to national matters.
The delegation emphasized that Buhari’s leadership—both as a military ruler and a democratically elected president—left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political evolution.
The visit also served as a reminder of the role of the diaspora in shaping national discourse. “We may live abroad, but our hearts remain tethered to Nigeria’s destiny,” Akpokabayen noted.
It expressed heartfelt sympathies to the Nigerian government and people during this time of national mourning.
The group also called on Nigerians at home and abroad to reflect on Buhari’s contributions to national unity, anti-corruption efforts, and democratic transition.
According to NUSA, the visit underscored the importance of honouring leaders who have shaped the country’s journey. The group reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Nigeria’s image and values across borders.
